  3. This is the README.TXT file for the 16-bit version
  4. of Icon Studio version 1.0.  This software requires
  5. a 16-bit Windows platform such as Windows 3.1 or
  6. Windows for Workgroups 3.11.  A 32-bit version of
  7. Icon Studio is available for use with Windows NT 3.5.
  8. Please contact Impact Software for more information.

  10. OVERVIEW
  11. --------
  12. Icon Studio can be used as a standalone application
  13. to edit icon resource (*.ICO) files.  It can also
  14. integrate seamlessly with Icon Manager, a full-
  15. featured utility for managing icons in many file
  16. formats including ICO, DLL, EXE, and ICL files.

  18.  
  19. Icon Studio offers many tools to simplify icon
  20. editing in a work environment designed specifically
  21. for small graphic images.  A status panel provides
  22. an actual size view of the drawing area and the
  23. current cursor position.  Extensive Undo and Redo
  24. capabilities encourage creativity and experi-
  25. mentation while designing.
  26.  
  27. Editing of 32 x 32 pixel, 16 color icon
  28. images is supported with Icon Studio, however
  29. it will not disturb other image formats when
  30. editing a file.

  33. most complete icon management package
  34. available, please consider our Icon
  35. Manager application.  Icon Manager
  36. reads and writes all file formats that contain
  37. icons, including ICO, EXE, DLL, ICL and ICA.
  38. Icon Studio integrates seamlessly as an
  39. image editor beginning in version 3.6 of Icon
  40. Manager (available on the CompuServe
  41. WINFUN forum, on America Online, and on
  42. our own support BBS.)

  44. Register Icon Studio, and we'll register you
  45. for Icon Manager for only $10 more (that's
  46. less than HALF of the normal cost).

  48. REGISTRATION
  49. ------------
  50. Icon Studio is not free software.  It is released
  51. as shareware, which provides the opportunity for
  52. the program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  53.  
  54. We hope that after you try Icon Studio you will
  55. like it so much that you will want to register.
  56. By doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
  57. us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
  58. shareware.

  63. DOCUMENTATION
  64. -------------
  65. The file MANUAL.WRI contains a detailed overview
  66. of the features of Icon Studio and how they are
  67. used.

  69. Icon Studio also includes on-line help covering
  70. all aspects of program operation, accessible
  71. directly from the main menu.

  74. INSTALLING ICON Studio
  75. -----------------------
  76. The Icon Studio package includes a graphical Windows
  77. installation program.  The name of the utility for
  78. installing to 16-bit Windows platforms such as
  79. Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is
  80. SETUP.EXE.
  81.  
  82. You should place all of the files included in the package
  83. on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of your hard
  84. drive.
  85.  
  86. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  87. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter
  88. "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  89. drive/directory that you are installing Icon Studio FROM
  90. (i.e. A:\SETUP).
  91.  
  92. 1. SETUP will then display an Installation Control window.
  93.    Three pushbuttons allow you to change the FROM and TO
  94.    drives and paths for your install.  SETUP initially
  95.    sets these values for you so that you can just click
  96.    the Install button if you do not need to make changes.
  97.  
  98. 2. If you would like to specify a different path for SETUP
  99.    to install Icon Studio to, select "Install To".  A
  100.    dialog will be displayed to allow a new location to be
  101.    selected.
  102.  
  103.    If you plan to use Icon Manager and Icon Studio, you
  104.    you should install both programs to the same location
  105.    on your computer. (see below, "Icon Manager")
  106.  
  107. 3. If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
  108.    SETUP will allow a Program Group to be selected
  109.    to receive the startup icon for Icon Studio.  Select
  110.    the "Program Group" button to select the group that
  111.    will receive the startup icon.
  112.  
  113. 4. Select 'OK'.  SETUP will inform you when installation
  114.    is complete.

  116. ICON MANAGER
  117. ------------
  118. Impact Software offers a quality utility for all aspects
  119. of icon management, Icon Manager.  Icon Manager and
  120. Icon Studio integrate seamlessly when used together.
  121.  
  122. Icon Manager allows you to open different file formats
  123. that contain embedded icons, such as ICO, EXE, DLL, and
  124. more.  The icons contained in a file are presented to
  125. you in sizeable windows, just like the Program Groups
  126. are displayed by Program Manager.  Easily drag and drop
  127. single or multiple icons from one file to another.
  128.  
  129. Organize your own icon file libraries.  Icon Manager
  130. will directly replace any icon in your Program Manager
  131. groups with any icon you view from Icon Manager.  It
  132. performs all of the work using DDE (Dynamic Data
  133. Exchange).  That means that the icon information is
  134. changed just as accurately and as easily as the setup
  135. utilities that install your applications.
  136.  
  137. Icon Manager and Icon Studio are distributed for evaluation
  138. in separate file packages to provide the smallest size
  139. modules for users who download software for evaluation.
  140.  
  141. When both Icon Manager and Icon Studio are installed on the
  142. same computer, they should be placed in the same directory
  143. on your hard drive.  Icon Manager will use Icon Studio for
  144. editing requests if it finds the program in the same
  145. directory that it is executed from.  If you would like Icon
  146. Manager to use Windows Paintbrush instead of Icon Studio,
  147. remove or rename the Icon Studio program (ICSTUD16.EXE or
  148. ICSTUDIO.EXE) if it is located in Icon Manager's directory.

  158.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  159.  
  160.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Icon
  161.  Studio on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  162.  whether Icon Studio is suitable for their needs.  The use
  163.  of Icon Studio, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  164.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Icon
  165.  Studio, outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  166.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  167.  strictly prohibited.

  169.  A single user license permits a user to use Icon Studio
  170.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  171.  program on different computers, as long as there is NO
  172.  POSSIBILITY of it being used at one location while it is
  173.  being used at another, or on a computer network by more than
  174.  one user at a time.
  175.  
  176.  No one may modify or patch the Icon Studio executable files
  177.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  178.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  179.  
  180.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Icon Studio
  181.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above
  182.  limitations, and also the following:
  183.  
  184.   1)    Icon Studio and all of its release files must be copied
  185.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  186.         this license information.
  187.  
  188.   2)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  189.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  190.  
  191.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  192.            may make Icon Studio available for downloading only as
  193.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  194.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  195.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  196.            charge for the download of Icon Studio.

  198.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  199.            the ASP may distribute Icon Studio, subject to the
  200.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  201.            approved vendors may distribute Icon Studio only after
  202.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  203.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  204.            details (enclose your catalog).
  205.  
  206.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the
  207.            Icon Studio diskette to their members, subject to
  208.            the above conditions, without specific permission.
  209.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee
  210.            not to exceed five dollars.
  211.  
  212.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  213.  
  214.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  215.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  216.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  217.   purchase.
  218.  
  219.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  220.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  221.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  222.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  223.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  224.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  225.  
  226.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  227.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  228.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  229.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  230.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  231.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  232.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  233.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  234.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  235.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  236.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  237.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  238.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  239.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  241.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  242.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  243.   contents.

  245.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  246.  
  247.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  248.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
  249.   the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at
